I try to do at least one devotional per month on rest.  God wants us to work, you can find the phrase, “if a man won’t work then he shouldn’t eat” in the Bible.  Yet God also wants us to get the rest that we need just as we have to let soil rest.  If you only grow a certain type of plant on a parcel of land, it can deplete all of the nutrients in the soil, but, if you will give the soil a year of rest after several years of using the soil to grow crops then the soil will do well.  If a person works his or herself to hard for to long, then they will be completely drained, but if they will get the rest that they need, they will be able to fulfill their job the next day.  Likewise, if we don’t rest in the Lord, if we don’t refresh ourselves with His Word, then the Christian walk will grow harder and harder each day.  We will be discouraged, and unable to follow God’s plan for our lives.  God will give us the peace and strength that our souls need, but still we have to go to Him and to His Word to get it, just as we have to go to bed to get our rest.  God wants us to work, but He also wants us to rest so that we are able to work.  “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.” Psalm 4:8 NIV.  God Bless!
