I have been going through the book of Second Samuel lately and tonight I was reading in chapter twelve which talks about David and Bathsheba.  There was part of a verse in this chapter that I hadn’t caught before.  After Nathan gave David the illustration of the man with many lambs taking from the man who only had one lamb, Nathan quoted the Lord saying, “Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.” 2 Samuel 12:10.  The sword, or weapon of war, would never depart from David’s lineage.  The most precious descendant of David, Jesus Christ, also faced a weapon of war.  When Christ was on the cross, shortly after He gave up the ghost a soldier was going to break the legs of those being crucified to hurry up the dying process, but the soldier found Christ dead.  So to make sure that Jesus was dead, the soldier pierced Jesus in the side with a spear.  The popular type of Roman spear that I can find is called a “pilum”, the most common type of “pilum” has the normal spear point that most people think of that was sharpened on both sides much like a sword.  It was basically a short sword made with an iron shaft that would be connected to a wooden handle.  I personally believe that the verse above was one of the reasons that Christ had to be pierced by the spear.  It was a weapon of war just like the sword.  Ultimately all of the Old Testament points to Christ, but there are certain verses in there that we do not often catch as prophetic, and it is so amazing to be able to say, “Hey, wait a minute, doesn’t that point to Christ in that…..”  That is why it is so critical for us to pray before, during, and after we read.  We need to pray for God to open our hearts, our eyes, and our minds to Scripture so that we can pick up on the golden nuggets like this in Scripture that are more than what first meets our eye.  God uses these moments for us to grow closer to Him and for us to trust the reliability of His Word more.  God’s Word is amazing, the fact that God used over forty different people to write His Word over a fifteen-hundred year span of time and for His Word to remain inerrant is only something that God could have done.  God Bless!
